Financial Resources —Did you know that there are many financial resources that can help people living with breast cancer? Find out more
The Siouxland Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is proud to have awarded more than $1 million in grants during the past years to promote breast health at all stages of life through prevention and early detection. Fundraising and grant-awarded programs have provided focused education to community members and healthcare providers. The Komen Siouxland Affiliate has sponsored or collaborated in many local and regional events, developing strong community partnerships and a high level of cause recognition. Third-party events such as Pink in the Rink, an event with our local pro hockey team, yielded invitations to work with other regional organizations in promoting the Komen cause.
Grant funding has supported partnerships with a variety of prevention, treatment and support initiatives. These projects have been selected by our independent Grant Review Panel as those that will have the greatest impact in our service area based upon our Community Profile. Please note that Susan G. Komen is not a direct service provider.
Grants awarded for 2016-2017 are listed below:
To make up for the loss of Women’s Health Providers at the Winnebago Hospital, the mammography tech will advance her training to include performing physical clinical breast exams with mammograms. She will also purchase an exam table. They expect to serve 250 women in 2016, and even more in future years
The June E Nylen Cancer Center will provide breast health education to native Americans living in Thurston County. They will partner with Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska and the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska. Educational programs will be held in Winnebago and Macy. They will secure a Native American speaker and offer $10 gift cards for attending. They expect an increase in knowledge of Native women of breast cancer prevention, screening, treatment and quality of life efforts.
The Promise Community Health Center seeks to reduce the incidence of and mortality rate from breast cancer in Sioux and Lyon counties by increasing awareness of and access to breast health care, education and mammography services. Disproportionately high incidence and mortality rate for breast cancer and the barriers of poverty rates, cultural differences and lack of insurance coverage are obstacles that the PCHC seeks to overcome. They will offer grant funded mammograms and community presentations.
The Iowa Department of Public Health will provide access to breast screening and diagnostic services to 100 low-income, uninsured or underinsured women throughout the Affiliate service area. Access to mammography will be targeted to women who are eligible for the Iowa Care for Yourself Program. Services will be offered to women who access screening thru the Woodbury County local enrollment site. Women will receive comprehensive breast screenings including breast exams prior to mammography.
